Lactase is an enzyme involved in the breakdown of lactose, a sugar naturally present in human milk, animal milk, and products made from them. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of this disaccharide, resulting in the formation of two monosaccharides - glucose and galactose. In mammals, this enzyme - also known as β-D-galactosidase - is naturally produced by the epithelial cells of the small intestine, primarily within the brush border.

Lactase improves the digestion of lactose in people who have difficulty absorbing it. Insufficient activity of this enzyme can prevent milk sugar from being fully broken down in the small intestine, allowing it to pass into further sections of the digestive tract. There, it may undergo fermentation by intestinal bacteria, which is often associated with bloating, a feeling of fullness, excessive gas production, or digestive discomfort. Supplementing the diet with lactase may be helpful, especially when consuming milk and dairy products containing lactose.
